What Kind of Writer Are You?

Everyone fits into one of these boxes. Or Do They?

Writers are a special group of people.

Collectively they love the art of manipulating words. And yes, it is Art.

Whether you are expressing your inner feelings, sharing your story that is oozing from your imagination, or ranting about your current social dislike, if you put your words into print, then it is a form of writing.

Writing is communication.

Maybe the lyrical harmony of poetry is the composition that springs from your pen (or keyboard). Or it might be a short.sweet.valuable post that captures what you need to say.

For others, writing is storytelling.

Telling a story can take many forms from novels to short stories and even to blogs. The lengths may vary, but the action is the same, sharing something with your audience. Whether it is a mystery thriller, a science fiction saga, or a steamy romance, there are plenty of books to be written and stories to be told.

However, even a blog can convey a message or share something worthwhile. Blogs seem to have been the logical evolution in a society that has no time. They fill the role of storytelling in a world where there is more demand on our time and seemingly less of it. You might wince at the never-ending scroll of articles professing the Holy Grail secret to “How I made all of this Money!” Nonetheless, these are also a form of writing.

Writing is a lot like food. There are so many different recipes that can be prepared. So many different tastes to be sampled. But at the end of the day, they are all mostly using the same ingredients. But it is how they are combined and prepared that ultimately creates the expression of the taste that we are trying to convey.

In writing, we all have the same words to use. But it is how we combine and prepare them that hopefully conveys the emotion that we are trying to share with the reader. And in writing, like in cooking, every dish is different. Every story unique.

Are you a Poet?

Does whimsical or lyrical harmony describe your style?

Are you a Blogger?

Is a 3 to 5 minute read enough to capture the essence of your message?

Are you a Storyteller?

Do you use words like epic or saga when describing your work?

Are you a Chronicler?

Maybe history, whether it was recent or from ages long forgotten, is your calling.

Are you a teacher?

How would we learn if someone didn’t share the knowledge with us?

Whatever kind of writer you are, whatever you have to share, someone in the world needs to hear it. And though we all are using the same words, the stories will all be different, and every message unique in its own way.

Like the writers that created them.

Just write every day of your life. — Ray Bradbury
