Blogging as Marketing

How Many Posts Do I Need?

March 2025

I began blogging on Medium as a means of keeping my ‘writing muscles’ active. I actually started by reading other writers works and then started writing my own. But it was good exercise to keep the creative side of my brain in shape.

After I published my first book and began exploring the marketing aspects of writing, I continued sporadically writing on Medium and a few other writing sites such as Substack. I enjoyed the writing activity as well as being able to read a variety of articles by other writers. I had built a website dedicated to my book (not this one) and was active in several social media accounts.

But as I actively began my push into marketing, I realized I was spreading myself too thin. I was blogging on three sites and posting on three others while working on the next book, developing the video podcasting site and creating this website. I needed to step back and evaluate.

Putting it all down on paper helped me to organize it. I listed each activity (writing the blog or post, editing, etc.), how often I engaged with it each week and how long each activity took. I put it into columns of the days of the week. Then I listed my other activities and responsibilities for the week into the columns as well. I totaled the time at the bottom of each column. Seeing it all on paper helped me visualize it. I couldn’t believe what the schedule looked like after I put it into a visual chart. No wonder I was struggling!

Using that chart, I began making decisions (some were hard, some not) about what activities were actually value added. Some days I had more free or creative time than on other days and I was able to move some activities to other days. Some things I decided to quit as I decided the potential benefit wasn’t worth the time I was spending.

I used that evaluation to make some changes. I pulled back on activities that weren’t helping to move me forward. I am following the new plan for 3 or 4 weeks and re-evaluate if necessary. Finding the right mix of activities vs time usage is important so you don’t get burned out.

For me, this website is my core landing page, my writing home. My blog and my newsletter are how I share information, my message and my progress with visitors or followers. My upcoming YouTube Video Podcast will compliment what I do here. Beyond that, my social media will be there to help draw people to my site. I am still working through which social media sites to invest my time in. I am on three but think the number should be two. Quality posts, several times a week, are better that trying to shower the internet with posts that no one may read.

Hopes this helps you think about your time management in a positive way. You’ll be more efficient and happier in your work if you aren’t feeling overwhelmed.

Thanks for your time. All the best on your journey.

Mike
